Three very different sisters--Brooks, the beautiful eldest, who is also a gifted athlete; May, the brainy middle child; and Palmer, the youngest who is a star softball player--cope with the death of their father. As Brooks starts drinking and Palmer simply withdraws from life, May is left feeling lost and alone. She is surprised, then, to find support in an unlikely source: her neighbor Pete, a boy her age whom she has always viewed more as an irritant than as a true friend.
